When Can I Enroll in Medicare Advantage in North Carolina?

  1. Understanding Medicare Advantage: Unlike Original Medicare, which is federally managed, Medicare Advantage (Part C) is offered through private insurers. These plans must cover all the services that Original Medicare does, except for hospice care. Additionally, most include prescription drug coverage, and often other services not covered by Original Medicare, such as dental, vision, and wellness programs.

  2. Benefits of Medicare Advantage (Part C): These plans combine the benefits of Medicare Parts A and B into one plan with a single monthly premium, making management simpler. Importantly, Medicare Advantage plans cap your annual out-of-pocket expenses, a benefit not offered by Original Medicare. Each plan can have different co-pays, deductibles, and restrictions such as provider networks and referral requirements.

  3. Eligibility and Enrollment: To be eligible, you must be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B and reside within the service area of the Medicare Advantage plan you're considering. The key times to enroll are:
